Media, PA – Today, Representative Bryan Lentz released the following statement in recognition of Black History Month: “This month we reflect on the extraordinary history of our diverse nation and the contributions and sacrifices made by generations who came before us,” said Lentz. “We commemorate Americans who refused to give in even when times were tough, Americans who stood up for their convictions and changed history. “As we commemorate Black History Month we should remember that our area is rich with African-American history,” said Lentz. “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. attended the Crozer Theological Seminary right here in Upland, PA, and worked at the Calvary Baptist Church in Chester. Dr. King refused to give in to those in power, and his courage and leadership helped to make America the great country that it is today.
“While we all remember the unparalleled legacy of Dr. King, other great American heroes have been too long forgotten. One brave stationmaster on the Underground Railroad was born and raised right here in Upper Darby Township. Thomas Garrett ran a stop on the Railroad for forty years, risking his own life to help more than 2,700 slaves escape to freedom,” said Lentz. “Right here in Delaware County we have the oldest African-American school of higher education, Cheyney University. Founded in 1837, its numerous successful graduates include Octavius Catto, an intellectual and bold civil rights activist who was shot on his way to vote on Election Day in 1871. “Catto and Garrett are just two of the many American heroes whose names have faded from our collective national memory,” said Lentz. “Taking the time this month to recognize and commemorate all those who bravely stood up to the status quo despite threats and intimidation should be a national duty we all undertake with pride. “As we remember and celebrate our history this month, we must also look to the future for our nation,” said Lentz. “We must rededicate ourselves to achieving that truly great American dream of equality for all. We cannot stop challenging the status quo and we cannot stop telling truth, for that is what has always moved America forward and made the United States the greatest country in the world.”
